DYKINS, Herbert Handford - World War II Veteran (March 10, 1924 - September 17, 2016)

A proud Welshman, Herbert grew up in Greenfield, North Wales and served in the Shetland Islands as part of the RAF in WWII. Apart from braving the cold and keeping a pet rabbit in his quarters, he was quickly promoted to staff sergeant, participated in the Battle of Atlantic and assisted in the procedures of the Damn Busters. Like his father Leonard who was in the WWI cavalry, and brother Arthur in the Navy, Herbert was very proud to have served his country. In
1957, he made the bold decision to emigrate to Montreal, QC with his wife Lilian, and children Jaqueline, Rowena and Richard. In Montreal he began his own bicycle business, “Les Industries Dykins” where he designed and manufactured the first bicycles made entirely in Canada. He traveled the world featuring his designs for CCM and BMX. Herbert was a successful businessman and enjoyed working alongside his son Richard and his Canadian born daughter Alicia. Herbert’s ingenuity continued over the years with his “Spinal Solution” shoulder and back relieving pack, that used hot and cold gel packs to alleviate spinal pain. He always kept busy with his many wood carvings, making rocking horses, furniture, birds and of course Welsh spoons. One of the most fulfilling moments for Herbert was being part of 1000 Welsh Male Voice Choir at Royal Albert Hall. He led a full life, traveling 37 different countries, and even found a connection to Buddhism amongst his travels. Above all, he loved his family and he was happy living with his daughter Alicia, her husband Alejandro and three children Adrianna, Wessley and Olivia. During the 21 years in Oshawa with his daughter, he continued to educate, travel and inspire those around him. He leaves behind eldest daughter Jacqueline, grandsons Graeme and Robert, great grandchildren Modeste, Athena and Ariel; daughter Rowena, poppa to
Rhyanon (Adam) and Carly, great grandfather to Bradaigh; son Richard, his spouse Lori and poppa to Jessica, Bryn and Hayley. Friends may call at MOUNT LAWN FUNERAL HOME & CEMETERY, 21 Garrard Rd., Whitby, 905-443-3376, on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 10-11 a.m. Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Poppy Fund.
