SCHROER, William A. passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Community Nursing Home Pickering on Friday, August 15th, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Bill, beloved husband of Agnes. Loving father of Margaret (Don), Thomas (Lisa), Cindy (Denis), Richard (Kim) and Brian. Cherished Opa of Luke (April), Jaclyn, Michael, Amanda (Matt), Stephanie (Jason), Lauren (Tim), Brayden, Stephen (Stephanie), Cadi (Ryan), Jamee (Daniel), Chris (Alysha), Kyle (Lauren), Greg and Allison. Adoring great Opa of Annalise, Charlotte, William, Josie, Kylie, Vanessa, Zachary and Vesa. Will be missed by many family and extended family in the Netherlands, Canada and Australia.

Bill was one of 14 siblings born in the small village of Groenlo, home of the world renowned Grolsch beer. With thirteen siblings, if he was late for dinner, he ate another day. Just missing the draft, he survived WWII by crossing the border and working for a German farmer. Once WWII was over, and being old enough to be drafted, he was sent to Indonesia as a peacekeeper with the Dutch forces. He returned with his only mishap being a broken leg due to a truck rollover. However, he was sent to the morgue being presumed deceased, until a colleague thankfully noticed his chest moving up and down. Upon leaving the army, he boarded a passenger ship with his sights set on the promised land of Canada. After settling in the Pickering area, his true love Agnes arrived from the homeland. The courtship was on, and bill and Agnes were married a year later. After numerous jobs in the area, he adjusted very well to his welding trade at General Motors. Over the next eight years, five wonderful children were born. He raised his family in two homes that he had a big hand in building. Bill always had time for his kids, plus numerous others while volunteering his time at the lacrosse box or hockey arena. As the children started leaving to be married, he built his second home in Ashburn. Eventually he wasn’t just dad, he was Opa to fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. In our view, there was never a better husband, father, Opa, and there never will be. He was truly one of a kind!!

Friends may call at MOUNT LAWN RECEPTION CENTRE 21 Garrard Rd. Whitby (N of Hwy #2) 905 443-3376 for visitation on Monday August 18th, 2014 from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Tuesday August 19th, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church (903 Giffard St. Whitby) at 10:00 a.m. Interment of Bill’s cremated remains to take place at a later date.
