GULENCHYN, John

1919 – 2015

The sixth child of Ukrainian emigrants Nicholas Gulenchyn and Anne Zawada, John Gulenchyn was born in a homestead cabin on a frigid Manitoba winter day near Elma. The family moved in 1921, eventually settling in Lakeview Gardens, Cedardale (later Oshawa) where they and others struggled for economic certainty through the days of the depression. John saw education and training as the way to secure his future and he completed high school at OCVI and a tool and die apprenticeship. His entry to the workforce was interrupted by service in WWII where his skills secured a non-commissioned officer rank, supervising the operations of the engine room in ships deployed all over the Atlantic. He volunteered for service in the Pacific, but the surrender of Japan lead to his safe return to Oshawa, and his waiting bride Olga Saychook. John and Olga were married in 1946 and completed their family with two children, Karen and John. John and Olga’s work ethic and frugality secured a bright future for their family. In his spare time, John’s interest in nature led to many hunting and fishing trips with friends, and the construction of a vacation home on Redstone Lake that the family enjoyed for many years. The principles by which he lived continue to echo through the generations that succeed him and mourn his passing. His wife Olga, daughter Karen and husband Gerry Lynes, son John and wife Pam, and youngest sister, Helen Hruska, survive John. His grandchildren and their spouses, Emily Lynes and Aaron Schooler, Meredith Lynes and Robert Gora, Alison Lynes and Troy Ginter, Nick Gulenchyn and Madeline Gulenchyn have been fortunate to have the opportunity to visit their Gigi and Baba on many occasions, and they, in turn are blessed to have respectful and devoted grandchildren. This past year, John was delighted to welcome great grandson and namesake, Jack Gora. Brothers Peter, Paul, Nick and Bill and sisters Mary Bilenduke, Kay Gulenchyn, Rose Harmer, and Anne Sobil predeceased John. The family is grateful for the expert care provided by the staff of Ward G5 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Friends may call at the MOUNT LAWN FUNERAL HOME & CEMETERY, 21 Garrard Rd., Whitby (N of Hwy 2), 905-443-3376, on Sunday, March 8, 2015 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to Lakeridge Health Foundation or Charity of Choice would be appreciated by the family.
