Smith, Joan MacDiarmid, (1925-2016)

Surrounded by the loving staff at Fairview Lodge on Saturday May 21, 2016 a beautiful soul left this earth to continue living with the love of her life Bill ( deceased 1994). Left to smile at all the wonderful memories are her children Leslie Whittaker, Penney Stevens ( Dennis, deceased ) and Ric Smith. Wonderful grandmother to 8 and great grandmother ( GG) to 16. Joan’s brother Douglas and family will always remember the family reunions that Mom organized. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will miss the stories of Mother’s antics. She was such a character. Sister Pat Gordon and brother Sandy Costain will be welcoming their big sister into heaven as she took care of them as a mother would.

Mother taught us to dance, play cards, poise, manners and compassion. But most of all, she taught us that taking care of oneself was high priority. She went back to school after her children were in high school to get an Early Childhood Education diploma as she enjoyed working at a nursery school with little people. She went on to work as a secretary with an agency and enjoyed different experiences from doctor’s offices to working in churches. She retired from this career at Hope United Church where she had met her husband ( many years before) and had all her children baptized.

Mom enjoyed many activities with her churches ( St. Timothy’s Agincourt and St. Simon The Apostle Toronto) She swam with some friends that called themselves the Merry Mermaids and shared a large order of fries at MacDonalds afterward. She line danced at the Pape Ave. Community Centre. Special thanks go to Fairview Lodge staff on Cullen Gardens who gave Mom a good quality of life for 9 years to the end. Also her special caregivers Nadine and Melissa for their support as well. Special friend Bruce for his cards and notes.

Mom is at peace with God now.

Visitation will take place on Thursday June 2, 2016 at 11 am at All Saints Anglican Church, 300 Dundas St. W, Whitby with Memorial Service at 12 noon and reception to follow in the parish hall. Interment to take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetic Association or All Saints Anglican Church Whitby.
