GREENAWAY, Benjamin H. (Ben)

Ben passed peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday June 1, 2016. Beloved husband and best friend of Pat. Cherished father and role model to Stephen. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews both at home and abroad, his extended family, friends, and all who knew him.

Ben was born in Shotts, Motherwell, Scotland to Irish parents Samuel and Sarah and moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland when he was six weeks of age. The youngest of 10 brothers and five sisters, Ben started a life long love affair with football and played goal keeper while growing up. He also started another, deeper love affair with Irene Patricia McAlinden. The two were married in March of 1954 before moving to Canada in June of 1956 where they settled down and started a family. During his life Ben worked for de Havilland, IBM, Honeywell and FMC before finally retiring in 1993.

He discovered a passion for golf while working at IBM and could be found at the Oshawa Airport Golf Course, later in his life, most every Tuesday morning with his golf buddy during the good weather. In 1981 he discovered another love: The 78th Fraser Highlanders, 2nd Battalion of Foot. He started his 35 years with the 78th as a Volunteer Sergeant and ultimately achieved the rarely bestowed honorary rank of Brevet Major after 15 years of dedicated service as Captain of the Honourable Guard.

Ben had yet another life long love affair with dancing. His beloved “Patrish” and he would dance every opportunity they got. They were especially fond of Scottish Country Dancing which they did for many years.

Ben was the last of the 16 children of Sam and Sarah. A true end to an era. He shall never be forgotten.

Funeral service to be held at MOUNT LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 21 Garrard Rd. (905-443-3376) on Tuesday June 7, 2016. Donations to the Lakeridge Health Foundation - Palliative Care Unit, where he spent his last days, or the Durham Humane Society, as he was a great lover of animals, will be gratefully accepted.
